India's yearly defense production hits record ₹1.78L crore
India's annual defense production has hit a record high of ₹1.78 lakh crore in the financial year 2025-26, a major milestone in the country's journey toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
The figure is a 15.6% increase from the previous fiscal year's output of ₹1.54 lakh crore and more than double of ₹84,643 crore during FY 2020-21.
Achievement possible due to collective efforts: Singh
According to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, indigenous defense production has nearly quadrupled over the last decade.
It has grown from ₹43,746 crore in FY 2013-14 to the current record level.
Singh credited PM Narendra Modi for this rapid progress and said that the achievement was made possible by the collective efforts of his department, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and private industry.
Private sector's growing role
The Ministry of Defence has revealed that DPSUs and other PSUs contributed nearly 76% of total defense production in FY 2025-26.
The private sector accounted for the remaining 24%, up from 22% last fiscal year.
Private sector production also hit a record high of around ₹42,000 crore, reflecting its growing role in India's defense industrial ecosystem.
Surge in defense exports
The surge in domestic production has also led to a record defense export of ₹38,424 crore during FY 2025-26.
This is a 55-fold increase since 2014.
Singh emphasized that this upward trajectory is a clear indicator of the country's expanding defense industrial base, and predicted continued acceleration in the years ahead with sustained policy support, several new initiatives, increased private sector participation, and growing export capabilities.
