LPG Price Revision: What 12 Domestic Cylinders Will Cost You in a Year

Newspoint
The recent increase of ₹29 in domestic LPG cylinder prices has sparked fresh discussions about household expenses. While consumers are paying more at the time of refill, the government says families continue to receive significant support through subsidies and price protection.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the actual cost of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder is more than ₹1,600. However, consumers currently pay around ₹942, meaning the government is effectively covering nearly ₹700 per cylinder. For a household using 12 cylinders a year, this translates into an annual benefit of about ₹8,400.

Extra Relief for Ujjwala Beneficiaries

Households enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) receive additional assistance. Officials state that eligible beneficiaries get a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder, taking the overall benefit to nearly ₹1,000 per refill.

Based on 12 cylinders a year, the government estimates that Ujjwala families could receive support worth approximately ₹12,000 annually.

What Does the Price Hike Mean for Family Budgets?

Despite the subsidy claims, consumers will still notice a rise in kitchen expenses. LPG prices remained unchanged during the first two months of 2026, but later revisions added to household costs.

For families consuming around 12 cylinders annually, the cumulative impact of recent price revisions could increase yearly kitchen expenses by roughly ₹803, assuming prices remain unchanged for the rest of the year.

A Mixed Picture for Ujjwala Households

While Ujjwala beneficiaries continue to receive subsidised cylinders, recent policy changes have reduced the overall subsidy support available during the financial year.

Earlier, subsidies were available on up to nine cylinders, providing a total benefit of ₹2,700. Under the revised system, the subsidy is limited to four cylinders, reducing the total support to ₹1,200. This effectively lowers annual subsidy benefits by ₹1,500 compared to the previous structure.

Subsidy Restricted to Four Refills

The government has clarified that the ₹300-per-cylinder subsidy under PMUY applies only to the first four refills in a financial year. Officials say the decision is based on usage patterns, as most Ujjwala households reportedly consume only four to five cylinders annually on average.

Balancing Relief and Rising Costs

The government maintains that LPG users continue to receive substantial support despite the recent price hike. However, for many households, especially those relying heavily on LPG throughout the year, the combination of higher refill prices and reduced subsidy coverage could result in a noticeable increase in annual kitchen expenses.
