Mother Dairy Introduces Biodegradable Milk Packaging to Reduce Plastic Waste on World Environment Day
In a major move towards sustainable packaging, Mother Dairy has introduced India’s first biodegradable milk pouch. The new packaging is designed to break down naturally after disposal, helping tackle the growing challenge of plastic waste and reducing its impact on the environment.
Launch Begins on World Environment Day
The company will roll out the eco-friendly milk pouch across the Delhi-NCR region from June 5, marking World Environment Day. Initially, the innovative packaging will be used for Mother Dairy’s cow milk variants, with plans to expand its usage in the future.
How the New Pouch Works
Mother Dairy says the pouch is made using a special degradable packaging technology. Once it reaches the soil, the material gradually transforms into a bioavailable wax. Naturally occurring microorganisms then break it down further into harmless natural elements.
Unlike conventional plastic, which can remain in the environment for hundreds of years, the new pouch is designed to decompose completely within a few years, leaving behind no lasting plastic residue.
Four Years of Research and Development
According to Managing Director Jayatirtha Chari, the company spent more than four years developing and testing the technology. The objective was clear: create a milk pouch that delivers convenience while ensuring that no plastic waste remains in the environment after use.
The innovation is the result of extensive research, testing, and refinement to ensure both functionality and environmental safety.
Biodegradable and Recyclable
One of the biggest advantages of the new packaging is that it is not only biodegradable but also recyclable. This dual benefit can help reduce the amount of plastic waste that escapes collection and recycling systems and eventually pollutes land and water bodies.
By combining recyclability with natural degradation, the pouch offers a more sustainable solution for everyday milk packaging.
A Significant Step for a Dairy Giant
Mother Dairy is among India’s leading dairy brands, supplying around 5.5 million litres of milk every day. The company operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board. With the launch of this pioneering packaging technology, it is taking a notable step toward reducing plastic pollution and promoting environmentally responsible consumption.
