PM Awas Yojana 2026: Who Can Apply And What Benefits Are Available?
Owning a permanent home remains a lifelong goal for millions of families across India, but rising construction costs and limited savings often make that dream difficult to achieve. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has been designed to bridge that gap by extending financial assistance and housing support to eligible households that do not own a pucca house.
The scheme covers both urban and rural areas, offering assistance for building a new home, purchasing one or upgrading an existing kutcha house. It also provides interest subsidies on eligible home loans, reducing the financial burden on beneficiaries.
The scheme is intended for families that do not already own a permanent house anywhere in the country. It aims to make safe housing more accessible while improving social and economic security for lower-income households.
PMAY Gramin is meant for families living in villages who either reside in kutcha houses or do not have a permanent home. Eligible beneficiaries receive PMAY financial assistance for constructing a pucca house, with support coming from both the Centre and state governments.
In many rural cases, financial assistance ranges between approximately ₹1.20 lakh and ₹1.30 lakh, while states may extend additional support depending on local provisions. Urban beneficiaries may receive assistance ranging from around ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, alongside applicable interest subsidies under the Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme.
Families falling under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) with annual income up to ₹3 lakh are eligible under the prescribed norms. Low-income groups earning between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh, as well as eligible middle-income households with annual income between ₹6 lakh and ₹18 lakh, can also avail benefits subject to scheme guidelines.
