PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026: 6 Easy Steps To Claim Up To Rs 78,000 Subsidy

Rising temperatures and frequent power cuts have made life difficult for many households. To reduce the burden of expensive electricity bills, the government has introduced the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, a major initiative that helps families generate their own power through rooftop solar panels.

Under this scheme, homeowners can receive heavy subsidies for installing solar systems and enjoy up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Apart from reducing monthly expenses, the scheme also offers relief from regular outages and rising power tariffs.

How Much Subsidy Can You Get?

The installation cost of rooftop solar panels usually ranges between ₹60,000 and ₹80,000 per kilowatt. However, the government subsidy cuts down the expense significantly.

1 kW Solar System

Perfect for small homes with limited electricity use. The government provides a subsidy of ₹30,000.

2 kW Solar System

One of the most preferred options for middle-class families. Eligible consumers receive ₹60,000 as direct support.

3 kW And Above

Families with higher power usage, including ACs and geysers, can get a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000.

Even if you install systems larger than 3 kW, the subsidy amount remains capped at ₹78,000.

Extra Benefit For Uttar Pradesh Residents

People living in Uttar Pradesh get an added advantage. Along with the central subsidy of ₹78,000, the state government provides an additional ₹30,000 assistance.

This means consumers in Uttar Pradesh can save up to ₹1.08 lakh directly on installation costs.

Recover Your Investment In Just A Few Years

Here is the estimated breakdown for a standard 3 kW solar setup:
  • Total installation cost: ₹1,80,000
  • Central subsidy: ₹78,000
  • Final investment from pocket: ₹1,08,000
A 3 kW plant can generate nearly 250 to 300 units of electricity every month. If electricity costs around ₹8 per unit, monthly savings can touch ₹2,200, leading to annual savings of nearly ₹26,400.

This means the full investment can be recovered in around 4 years. In Uttar Pradesh, the payback period becomes even shorter at nearly 3 years.

Since solar panels generally last about 25 years, households can enjoy almost two decades of nearly free electricity after recovering the initial cost.

Step-By-Step Process To Apply

The scheme is available for people who own a permanent rooftop and have an active electricity connection in their name.

No Budget? Low-Interest Loans Are Also Available

The EMI remains manageable, and in many cases, the savings on electricity bills can help cover the monthly repayment amount.
