Prakash Raj Gets Bail in Multiple Voter Registration Case Linked to 2019 Lok Sabha Elections
Actor and filmmaker Prakash Raj has been granted bail by a Bengaluru court in a case related to allegations that he was registered as a voter in multiple states during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections . The case, which has been pending for several years, revolves around claims that the actor did not disclose multiple voter registrations while filing his nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Bengaluru Central constituency.
The latest development comes after the actor voluntarily appeared before the court, leading to the recall of an earlier non-bailable warrant that had been issued against him for failing to appear during previous hearings.
Why Is Prakash Raj Facing the Case?
The complaint dates back to 2019 when advocate K. Dilip Kumar alleged that Prakash Raj's name appeared on electoral rolls in more than one state, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. According to the complaint, the actor was allegedly enrolled as a voter in multiple Assembly constituencies while contesting the Lok Sabha elections.
The complainant further alleged that Prakash Raj did not mention these multiple voter registrations in the affidavit submitted along with his election nomination papers, raising questions under provisions of the Representation of the People Act.
Under Indian election laws, a citizen is permitted to vote only at one place and should ordinarily be registered in only one electoral roll at a time. Whether the allegations against the actor amount to a legal violation will ultimately be decided during the trial.
Court Grants Bail With Conditions
On July 10, the Bengaluru court granted bail to Prakash Raj after hearing submissions from both sides. Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Shantappa Kale directed the actor to furnish a cash security of ₹4,000 and remain present before the court on all future hearing dates. The court also recalled the previously issued non-bailable warrant.
During the hearing, Prakash Raj's legal counsel argued that the actor had never been served with the earlier summons or warrants. According to the defence, he became aware of the proceedings only through media reports and subsequently appeared before the court voluntarily.
