Rs 17 Lakh Wedding Leaves Parents With Little Retirement Savings; Daughter Seeks Help on Reddit

A 26-year-old woman has turned to Reddit for financial advice after discovering that her parents have almost no retirement savings left. The revelation came after her family spent around Rs 17 lakh on her wedding, leaving her concerned about how her ageing parents will manage their daily expenses, healthcare costs and financial needs in the coming years. Although the family owns a house and has gold worth approximately Rs 30 lakh, she fears these assets may not be enough to ensure their financial security.
17 Lakh marriage led to no retirement savings for parents

The woman, who recently started her first job with a monthly salary of Rs 20,000, is worried about taking responsibility for her parents' financial needs while managing her own expenses. Her post has sparked a discussion on Reddit, with users sharing suggestions about retirement planning, savings, investments and making better use of existing family assets.

Parents' Retirement Savings Become a Concern After Wedding

Sharing her concerns on the subreddit r/IndianPersonalFinance, the woman posted, “Parents in early 60s with no retirement fund . How to help them?." She explained that she comes from a lower-middle-class family and is her parents' only child.

Her father had purchased a plot of land and constructed a two-storey house with four bedrooms in a tier-3 city. Her parents currently live in the property, and she had assumed that they were financially comfortable.

However, she began questioning their financial stability after discovering how much money had been spent on her wedding. According to her, her father had also lent Rs 10 lakh to her uncle, who was going through a financial crisis. A significant portion of the remaining savings was then used to organise her wedding, which reportedly cost around Rs 17 lakh.

She said her father had never openly discussed the family's financial position with either her or her mother. As a result, she had little understanding of their savings, investments or financial commitments until recently.

Daughter Worried About Parents' Healthcare and Monthly Expenses

The woman revealed that her father is 63 years old and earns approximately Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 every month. However, she is not certain about his exact income or how much money he has left after meeting household expenses.

While the family owns gold worth around Rs 30 lakh and has a house of its own, she is particularly concerned about unexpected medical expenses and the financial challenges that could arise as her parents grow older.

She has already purchased health insurance worth Rs 10 lakh for both parents, but remains uncertain about how to prepare for their long-term financial needs.

Her own financial situation is also a concern. Having joined her first job just two months ago, she earns Rs 20,000 per month and does not feel she can immediately look for another opportunity offering a higher salary.

Expressing her anxiety, she wrote, “I’m in 2nd month at my job so I can’t switch so early for better pay. I’m really really worried about my parents,"

She also mentioned that she had not discussed the situation with her husband because she felt uncomfortable bringing up the family's financial problems.

Reddit Users Share Retirement Planning and Investment Suggestions

The woman's post attracted several responses from Reddit users, many of whom suggested exploring different investment options to create a financial safety net for her parents.

One commenter recommended starting a debt mutual fund Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) to gradually build a separate fund. The user suggested keeping the money aside rather than handing it directly to her parents, so it could be used when genuinely required.

The commenter advised, “Do one thing: save whatever you can for them in a debt mutual fund SIP; don’t give it to them directly; they might spend it on stupid things. When you see that they are facing issues, you help them out with that money."

Another Reddit user suggested exploring the Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme (SCSS), a government-backed savings option designed for eligible senior citizens. The commenter pointed out its interest rate and suggested that selling a portion of the family's gold could help generate a regular income.

The user wrote, “Why not search for Senior Citizen Savings Scheme? The interest is 8.25% and it is tax-free. So if you sell some gold and put the money in this scheme, it can be a good starting point for regular income."

However, the suggestion about using the family's gold also received attention from another commenter, who questioned why such a valuable asset was being kept unused.

The user asked, “You are married, so what is the 30L gold doing? Idling away? Sell that and start an SWP."

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) allows investors to withdraw a fixed amount from their mutual fund investments at regular intervals. However, investment choices and withdrawals need to be evaluated carefully, considering risk, returns and the family's financial requirements.

Redditors Advise Understanding Parents' Finances Before Making Decisions

Some users also emphasised that the woman should first understand her parents' complete financial situation rather than making investment decisions out of fear.

They suggested having an open conversation about her father's income, household expenses, existing savings, outstanding loans and other financial responsibilities. This could help the family identify how much money is actually needed for retirement and whether their existing assets can support them.

One Reddit user offered a reassuring perspective, saying, “I can understand your worry. I would first try to understand my parents’ income, expenses, and savings without blaming them. Having their own house and gold is already a good thing. I would build my own emergency fund and discuss finances with my husband when ready. You do not have to solve everything alone."

The discussion highlights a common financial concern among young working Indians who worry about supporting ageing parents while building their own financial future. It also underlines the importance of discussing retirement planning, healthcare expenses and savings within families before financial challenges arise.
