Severe Heatwave Conditions Across the Region

Delhi-NCR, western Rajasthan, east Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana are among the worst-hit regions due to the heatwaves. According to IMD forecasts, the hot daytime conditions combined with warm nights are adding to the discomfort which is faced by the public

The ongoing ‘Nautapa’ period, which is traditionally known as the hottest phase before monsoon onset according to the Hindu mythology, is expected to intensify the heat further over the next few days. Weather experts say dry northwesterly winds from Rajasthan are fuelling the extreme conditions across the Indo-Gangetic plains.

In Rajasthan, isolated areas are likely to witness severe heatwave conditions with temperatures nearing 47 degrees Celsius. Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and parts of Punjab are also expected to remain under intense heat stress through midweek.

Power Demand Reaches High Levels

The extreme weather has also increased electricity consumption across NCR to a new extent. People are relying heavily on the usage of air conditioners and coolers to combat this heat.

At the same time, air quality in parts of the NCR has also worsened due to high levels of pollution and dust. The combination of heat and poor air quality is causing significant discomfort for the residents.

Relief Likely Later This Week

While the heatwave is expected to continue for the next few days, meteorologists have predicted that there will be some relief by the end of next week. Isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall may come around May 28–30 in parts of Delhi-NCR.

However, there is some unfortunate news too. The temperatures are still likely to remain high in spite of the brief rain activity. Experts have warned residents to stay cautious, drink plenty of water, and avoid direct sunlight, especially during the afternoon hours from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
