What happened to 15-year-old Gopal Sharma? The Greater Noida murder case explained
Noida: The murder of 15-year-old Gopal Sharma in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida has triggered widespread public anger, with family members alleging that the teenager was subjected to extreme brutality before being killed. While the victim's relatives have demanded strict action against those responsible, police have disputed several claims circulating on social media and in news reports. The case, however, has seen a major breakthrough with the arrest of three accused following a police encounter.
Gopal Sharma, a Class 9 student and son of Ravi Bhushan alias Bunty, was a resident of Banwari Bans village under the Jewar Kotwali police station limits.
According to the missing person complaint filed by his father on May 22, the teenager had left home between 3.30 pm and 4 pm on May 21 and did not return. After searching for him unsuccessfully, the family approached police and lodged a complaint.
In the FIR, Gopal's father stated: "My son, Gopal Sharma, left his home between 3:30 and 4:00 pm on May 21, 2026, and has not returned yet. We have called all our relatives to find out. We request you to take this matter seriously and initiate a search for him as soon as possible."
Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Body found in abandoned houseOn May 23, Gopal's body was recovered from a room inside an abandoned house in Rohi village, around four kilometres from his native village.
According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, the room contained a significant amount of blood and the teenager had sustained serious head injuries. Following the recovery of the body, family members alleged murder and police began questioning several individuals as part of the investigation.
Family alleges severe tortureThe victim's family claimed that Gopal was subjected to brutal torture before his death.
Speaking to Zee News, Gopal's father Bunty alleged that the condition of the body was horrific. He claimed the teenager's eyes appeared swollen, acid had been thrown on his body and his tongue had been cut.
Gopal's mother Saroj Sharma said the condition of her son's body was so disturbing that she could barely look at it. His grandmother also alleged that something had been forced into his mouth and that his eyes appeared to be bulging.
In another media interaction, Bunty said he had personally discovered his son's body. He also expressed frustration over the investigation and demanded strict action against the accused.
"I want an encounter [of the accused], I want a bulldozer."
He further alleged:
"My son’s private parts were cut off, and he was subjected to such cruelty. If my son had been shot, I wouldn’t have felt as much pain as I do after hearing these things. Nails were driven into his hands, acid was poured on him, and he was urinated on."
The allegations quickly gained attention and led to protests by various organisations.
Three accused arrested after police encounterThe investigation later took a significant turn when Greater Noida Police arrested three accused allegedly linked to the murder.
The announcement was made by Greater Noida Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) on X, stating that the case had been solved and that three accused had been apprehended in an injured condition following a police encounter.
The arrests came after days of protests and growing pressure on authorities to identify those responsible for the teenager's death.
According to PTI report, the police said, the case was rooted in an acrimony that set in about one-and-a-half months ago, when the boy's grandmother confronted the accused at their place and scolded them for introducing the teenager to hookah and other bad habits.
The accused bore a grudge against the boy ever since, they said.
On May 21, when the boy visited their house, the accused allegedly made him smoke a hookah mixed with a high amount of tobacco, which led to his death. They then dumped his body in an abandoned house, the police said.
Police reject claims of mutilation and acid attackWhile allegations of extreme brutality dominated public discussions, Greater Noida Police have denied several of the claims.
Speaking to OpIndia, DCP Praveen Ranjan Singh said the post-mortem examination was videographed and that investigators found no evidence supporting allegations of mutilation or acid attacks.
Addressing a viral photograph of the body, the officer said the appearance of the corpse was primarily due to decomposition.
"The body was decomposing, it was hot, and the room was as hot as a furnace."
He also dismissed social media claims that the teenager had been sexually assaulted.
According to the officer, the post-mortem report confirmed a head injury, but the exact cause of death was still being investigated.
In a statement posted on X, the DCP said a case had initially been registered regarding the disappearance of the teenager and that police immediately launched a search operation along with the family.
He further stated that after receiving information about a body in an abandoned house in Rohi village, police and forensic teams reached the scene and conducted necessary investigations.
The officer added:
"According to the post-mortem report, the alleged allegations of cutting of private parts and acid attack on the eyes are completely false and misleading."
Police said four teams had been formed to investigate the case and that important leads had been obtained during the inquiry.
BJP MLA seeks strict actionThe incident also drew reactions from political leaders.
BJP MLA Shalabh Mani Tripathi said he had spoken to Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajiv Krishna and STF Chief Amitabh Yash regarding the case.
In a post on X, he said:
"My heart is deeply saddened by the brutal murder of innocent boy Gopal Sharma in Greater Noida. Those who carried out this crime cannot be called human; they are brutes and will be treated as brutes."
He further added:
"Yogi Adityanath’s government is taking swift action on this matter. I have also spoken to Uttar Pradesh DGP Rajiv Krishna and STF Chief Amitabh Yash about this incident and have urged them to take the strongest possible action against the perpetrators. Our condolences are with the victim’s family; the incident will be revealed soon."
The case has sparked protests by several social and community organisations. Members of the Rashtriya Brahmin Ekta Manch have met the victim's family and warned of large-scale protests if strict action is not taken.
Local Brahmin groups have also expressed anger over the incident, while police maintain that the investigation is progressing and that all aspects of the case are being examined.
