Delhi Prepares Drone Policy; Over 1,000 New Jobs Expected

Delhi Govt Jobs: Preparations are underway to create new employment and business opportunities in the drone sector in Delhi. The draft of the Delhi government's proposed drone policy is ready and could be submitted for Cabinet approval within the next month. The government targets creating more than 1,000 jobs through this policy. Beyond boosting the drone industry, the policy will emphasize developing infrastructure for research, training, testing, and drone operations.

Awaiting Cabinet Approval

Information Technology Minister Pankaj Singh stated that the proposed drone policy is ready. It is currently undergoing inter-departmental consultations. According to officials, following the Minister's approval, the policy will be sent to the Legal, Finance, and other relevant departments. The government may place it before the Cabinet within a month. The proposed policy will be valid for five years, with a budget allocation of ₹85 crore. It includes plans to provide assistance to startups and businesses operating in the drone sector. Support may also be extended to educational institutions conducting research on drones and related technologies.

Focus on Research and Testing

The policy envisions the development of drone research clusters, specialized flight testing facilities, and a Centre of Excellence. The government is also considering provisions such as subsidies and State GST reimbursements to encourage drone-related businesses and research. Recognizing the need for skilled personnel in drone manufacturing, operation, and maintenance, the policy will also focus on skill training; plans are being considered to provide this training through ITIs. Drone awareness programs in schools and remote pilot training initiatives may also be included in the policy.

Increased Use in Government Operations

The proposed policy will emphasize identifying new areas for the government and civilian use of drones; these include tasks such as policing, surveillance, traffic management, disaster management, land surveys, encroachment detection, and 3D mapping. The potential for drone usage in the Yamuna region is also being explored. Additionally, consideration is being given to promoting the commercial use of drones in the real estate, telecommunications, and media sectors.

Focus on Safety and Regulations

The government will develop a framework under existing regulations to ensure the safe and controlled use of drones. The policy will prioritize preventing drone misuse, strengthening surveillance and enforcement mechanisms, and enhancing coordination with the DGCA’s 'Digital Sky' platform.
