Depression is not a myth; instead of saying 'be strong', it is important to understand the patient's pain
Although awareness about mental illness has increased, many misconceptions still persist regarding depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Often, people dismiss feelings of sadness, nervousness, or constant stress as "overthinking." This is why some people are unable to talk openly about these issues.
The widespread misconceptions surrounding mental illness not only exacerbate patients' difficulties but also prevent them from receiving timely treatment. To understand this, we spoke with Dr. Mukesh Patel (Professor, Psychiatrist, DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune) and Dr. Abhineet Kumar,
There are many myths about mental illness in society. Many people believe that depression or anxiety are merely a myth. If a person is determined, they can overcome it on their own. Some people consider it a mental weakness, but this is not true. This problem can happen to anyone at any time. Just as any disease in our body is caused by a nutritional deficiency or disorder, there are many reasons behind the deterioration of mental health.
What does Dr. Mukesh Patel say?Dr. Mukesh Patel says that the biggest problem with mental illness is that people don't understand it as a disease, but instead associate it with superstition and misconceptions. Just as treatment is necessary for diabetes, asthma, or cancer, mental problems like depression and anxiety also require treatment. However, we are told not to think too much, be strong, and everything will be fine. There can be many reasons behind mental health deterioration. This can include past accidents, mental conditions, and many other reasons.
How does misconception cause harm?Mental illness itself doesn't cause as much harm as people's delusions. Many people hide their problems out of fear of being ridiculed or labeled insane. This results in the sufferer not receiving timely treatment and, at times, even taking the wrong steps.
What does Dr. Abhineet Kumar say?Dr. Abhineet Kumar explained that mental illness is a purely medical condition. There are treatments available, but due to widespread misconceptions in society, patients hesitate to even see a doctor. They fear that if anyone finds out, they might be labeled insane. This fear often prevents people from seeking timely treatment.
Why is it important to seek timely treatment? If someone has been experiencing long-term problems like depression, anxiety, stress, fear, sleep problems, or a loss of interest in daily activities, they should never be ignored. With timely treatment, the patient feels better and can return to a normal life.
