Ingredients For Cinnamon Rolls

For The Dough

  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • ¼ cup caster sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup melted butter

For The Cinnamon Filling

  • ⅓ cup softened butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons ground cinnamon

For The Creamy Topping

  • ½ cup cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • ¾ cup icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk, if required

How To Make Cinnamon Rolls

Step 1: Prepare The Dough

Add the warm milk, yeast and a little sugar to a large bowl. Let the mixture sit for around five minutes. Add the flour, remaining sugar, salt, egg and melted butter.

Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead it on a lightly floured surface for around eight to 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it and leave it in a warm place for about one hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 2: Make The Cinnamon Filling

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. Mix the softened butter, brown sugar and ground cinnamon until combined.

Once the dough has risen, transfer it to a floured surface and roll it into a large rectangle. Spread the cinnamon filling evenly across the surface, making sure it reaches close to the edges.

Step 3: Roll And Cut

Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough into a firm log. Using a sharp knife, cut it into around 10 to 12 equal-sized pieces.

Arrange the cinnamon rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between them. Cover and allow them to rest for another 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 4: Bake The Rolls

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake the cinnamon rolls for around 20 to 25 minutes, or until they turn lightly golden on top.

Avoid overbaking them, as this can make the rolls dry instead of soft and fluffy.

Prepare The Cream Cheese Topping

While the cinnamon rolls are baking, whisk together the cream cheese, softened butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Add a little milk if the mixture is too thick.

Spread the topping over the warm cinnamon rolls once they are removed from the oven. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Tips For Soft And Fluffy Cinnamon Rolls

For the best cinnamon rolls recipe, make sure the milk is warm rather than hot, as excessive heat can affect the yeast. Give the dough enough time to rise and avoid adding too much flour while kneading.

Rolling the dough evenly also helps ensure that every cinnamon roll has a balanced layer of buttery cinnamon filling.

These homemade cinnamon rolls taste best when served warm and fresh. They can be enjoyed with tea, coffee or as a sweet breakfast treat.
