Eid al-Fitr 2024: Celebrating the End of Ramadan with Healthier Choices
Eid al-Fitr, one of the most cherished festivals in the Islamic calendar, signifies the conclusion of Ramadan—the sacred month of fasting, reflection, and prayer. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, breaking their fast with a traditional Iftar meal. This meal often features an array of delectable dishes, including sweet desserts, hearty soups, fresh fruits, and sugary beverages.
Acknowledging the high sugar consumption during this period, Dr. Amina Hassan , a renowned consultant dietitian and nutritionist, recently shared healthier alternatives for those seeking to replace sugary drinks with more nutritious options during Ramadan.
In an Instagram video, Dr. Amina Hassan unveiled a recipe that doubles as a weight-loss drink. She suggested that individuals aiming to shed four to five kilograms could prepare this drink at home for Iftar, substituting it for sugary beverages.
According to Dr. Amina Hassan, the drink requires cucumber slices, chia seeds, carrots, lemon, ginger, and beetroot. These ingredients should be soaked in water for two to three hours and consumed during non-fasting hours.
The drink is said to improve digestion, alleviate bloating and constipation, and boost energy levels. Dr. Amina also highlighted its benefits for individuals with insulin resistance, making it suitable for those managing conditions like PCOS, diabetes, fatty liver, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.
“It will eliminate toxins from the body and will also glow your skin. Because all these things are full of vitamin C and antioxidants. And it will boost your metabolism, which will speed up your weight loss process," Dr. Amina Hassan explained in the video.
Echoing similar sentiments, clinical dietician Dr. Ridhima Khamesra recently discussed the benefits of detox drinks and their role in weight loss. Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Dr. Ridhima stated, “No one beverage will cause noticeable weight loss, but a blend of cucumber, carrot, chia seeds, lemon, ginger, and beetroot can offer several health advantages."
This year, Ramadan is expected to commence on Friday, February 28, and conclude on Sunday, March 30. Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadan, is anticipated to fall on either March 30 or 31, bringing joy and celebration to Muslims worldwide.
By incorporating healthier alternatives like Dr. Amina’s detox drink, individuals can enjoy a more balanced and nutritious Ramadan, paving the way for a healthier lifestyle beyond the holy month.
