Ethanol at Every Turn? Starting with 5,200 Pumps—What Is the Government's Mega Plan for 2027?
India's automotive sector and fuel market are heading towards a major transformation. Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has announced plans to establish a network of approximately 5,200 ethanol dispensing stations across the country. This initiative is being launched to promote flex-fuel vehicles and reduce dependence on petrol and diesel. The government plans to rapidly set up this network in the first phase across major cities such as Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. Speaking at the launch event of Maruti Suzuki's flex-fuel WagonR, the Minister noted that previous efforts regarding E100 ethanol stations were unsuccessful because there was an insufficient number of flex-fuel vehicles available in the market at the time. The situation has now changed, and automotive companies are introducing models capable of running on ethanol-based fuels.
The government is developing large-scale infrastructure to enhance the availability of ethanol nationwide. According to Hardeep Singh Puri, the initiative will commence in select cities but will eventually be expanded to a national level. The objective is to significantly expand this network by the end of 2026 and further by December 2027.
**Why Flex-Fuel Vehicles Will Be a Game-Changer**
Flex-fuel technology enables vehicles to operate on varying blends of petrol and ethanol. According to the Minister, if just 50 percent of the new vehicles sold in the country were equipped with flex-fuel technology, it could facilitate the consumption of an additional 4 billion liters of ethanol. This would reduce the demand for imported crude oil and result in significant foreign exchange savings.
**New Opportunities for Farmers**
The government does not view this initiative as being limited solely to the automotive sector. The growing demand for ethanol is also expected to benefit the agricultural sector. The government aims to encourage farmers to shift away from water-intensive crops—such as paddy (rice)—and instead cultivate maize and other alternative crops. This approach could not only aid in groundwater conservation but also help boost farmers' incomes. The Strait of Hormuz and India's Energy Security
**Strengthened Domestic LPG Production**
The Minister highlighted that domestic LPG production in the country has witnessed a consistent increase. This production volume has risen from 32,000 metric tonnes per day to reach 54,000 metric tonnes per day. This growth has reduced dependence on imports and bolstered the nation's energy self-reliance.
**Maruti WagonR Flex Fuel Takes Center Stage**
Maruti Suzuki's Flex Fuel WagonR has emerged as the flagship face of this entire strategy. The government and automotive manufacturers anticipate that as the number of such models increases, the utilization of ethanol fueling stations will also rise, thereby strengthening the alternative fuel ecosystem within the country.
**Impact on the Common Citizen**
If the flex fuel network proves successful, vehicle owners in the coming years will have the opportunity to use ethanol-based fuels as an alternative to petrol. This could help reduce fuel costs, decrease dependence on imported oil, and curb pollution. The government believes that this initiative will accelerate India's transition toward a clean and self-reliant energy system.
