From Compassion to Policy: The Kingdom That Is Swapping Chicken-Based Meals For Tofu in Schools, Monasteries and Nunneries

In the monasteries and schools of Bhutan — a nation whose guiding philosophy is Gross National Happiness — a quiet transformation has been unfolding this year, one that speaks directly to an idea at the heart of most spiritual traditions: that what we choose to eat is also a choice about who we choose to be.
Over a 26-day engagement earlier this year, the Plant Based Treaty 's Asia team was invited by Bhutan's Ministry of Education and Skills Development to train institutional kitchens — in government and private schools, monasteries, and nunneries — to prepare wholesome, plant-based meals in place of meat and dairy. What began as a modest pilot has since grown into something the organisers describe as the beginning of a national shift.
