How to Identify a Genuine Puja Conch: When buying a conch shell for worship, people often purchase it based solely on its beauty, yet identifying a genuine one is equally important. Conch shells are considered highly auspicious in religious beliefs, leading to significant market demand. Consequently, fake conch shells are often sold alongside genuine ones. You can identify a real conch by paying attention to simple factors like its weight, texture, color, and shape. If you are planning to buy a conch for your home puja, keep these important points in mind.

It is essential to consider certain factors when purchasing a conch shell from the market. Nowadays, fake conch shells are sold to generate higher profits. However, you can distinguish between real and fake ones using simple methods. According to religious belief, the conch originated from the *Samudra Manthan* (Churning of the Ocean); it was one of the fourteen precious gems (*Ratnas*) that emerged during this process.

Bhanu Mishra, a Varanasi-based trader dealing in puja supplies and conch shells, explained that a genuine conch is solid and has a weight proportionate to its size. Its color does not fade to yellow with regular handling or use; instead, it may exhibit a subtle reddish or pinkish hue. Conversely, if a conch appears excessively shiny, it might be a fake.

He noted that conch shells are not manufactured but form naturally in the ocean; therefore, every conch differs in shape and texture. If a shop displays multiple conch shells that are identical in shape and thickness, there is a possibility they are fake. It is also said that when a genuine conch is held close to the ear, one can hear a faint resonance resembling the sound of ocean waves.

Some people also suggest using the hot water test to identify fake conch shells. Placing a fake conch in hot water can cause it to crack or turn yellow. Fake conch shells are typically made from materials such as marble powder, Plaster of Paris, and plastic. These are manufactured using molds; consequently, imitation conch shells appear uniform in shape and have a nearly identical thickness.

The conch shell holds special significance in Sanatan Dharma. Religious belief holds that Goddess Lakshmi resides in a home where a conch shell is kept and its auspicious sound resonates regularly. However, if an imitation conch shell is kept or used, one does not derive the spiritual benefits associated with it according to religious tenets. Therefore, it is recommended to keep an authentic conch shell for worship.

Pandit Sanjay Upadhyay stated that happiness, peace, and prosperity prevail in a home where the sound of the conch shell echoes daily. According to religious belief, Goddess Lakshmi is the daughter of the Ocean King (Samudra-raj), making the conch shell her sibling. Lord Vishnu also holds a conch shell in His hand. Additionally, the conch shell is said to share a special connection with Goddess Gayatri.
