Govinda Reflects on Grief and Life Lessons After Mother's Passing
Actor Govinda has shared his profound sorrow following the loss of his mother, Nirmala Devi, revealing a poignant moment when he ventured into the Narmada River, hoping to reunite with her.
In a recent discussion, Govinda expressed the overwhelming pain he felt after his mother's death in 1996, stating that it left him feeling as though his life had come to an end.
He recalled, "I was engulfed in pain. It felt like everything was over; that was the end for me."
Nirmala Devi, a celebrated Hindustani classical singer and actress, passed away on June 15, 1996, at the age of 69. Govinda often acknowledges her significant spiritual influence on his life and career.
Reflecting on his experience at the Narmada River, he shared, "I thought if I went deeper into the river, I would see my mother again. So, I stepped in." When questioned if he was attempting to take his own life, Govinda responded, "In a way. My bond with her was profound; I loved her dearly." He clarified that he didn't see it merely as suicidal behavior, stating, "That's how people label it. We don't perceive it that way. Life transforms; it takes on new shapes and forms."
During this moment, a sadhu, whom he fondly remembers as Ram Kundal, intervened and helped him out of the water.
"He approached me and asked, 'What happened, Govind?'" he recounted.
This experience prompted Govinda to reevaluate his life. "Someone told me at that moment that I was on the wrong path... I learned that I needed to live for my children," he explained.
He mentioned it took him about 10 to 15 days to recover from that mindset, realizing there was more to experience in life and that he needed to move forward.
After his mother's passing, he felt a profound emptiness, which shifted his perspective on cinema and fame.
"Films feel like mere toys to me. I shouldn't say this, but I fear God. If I offend anyone, I apologize... I believe that acting and stardom are manifestations of the divine. Everything we have is a gift from God, and we are merely playing our parts in it. We have witnessed and experienced all of this," he stated. For Govinda, his greatest accomplishment was realizing his mother's dreams for him.
"The true achievement for me was serving my family and fulfilling my mother's aspirations for me, especially what she envisioned when I turned 21. That was her dream, and I was able to realize it. I found true heroism in that aspect of my life, which is a unique perspective," he added.
