Why isn't it green, blue, or transparent? In reality, the choice isn't about fashion or design; there are significant reasons linked to your safety.

What are this gas pipe and LPG?

It is a rubber tube that conveys gas from the cylinder to the stove. For your information, LPG stands for 'Liquefied Petroleum Gas'. It is a mixture of propane and butane gases used for cooking.

Why is this pipe always orange?

There are four main reasons for this:

Easy Identification: Orange is a very bright color. During inspections, gas mechanics or inspectors can instantly recognize it as an LPG connection from a distance. Using a pipe of this specific color is a mandatory safety rule for domestic gas connections in India.
Industry Standard: All major gas pipe manufacturers in India use this color so that people immediately understand that an orange pipe signifies a gas connection.
Special Material Composition: This is not ordinary rubber. The pipe is made from a special synthetic rubber designed to withstand high gas pressure and heat. To enhance its strength, it is reinforced with an internal mesh of high-tensile steel wires. It is also resistant to oil and weather conditions.

Danger Alert: Any cuts, cracks, or damage to the pipe are immediately visible against this color. This allows you to replace the pipe in time and avoid any major accidents.

Why is it important to look for the ‘ISI mark’ on the pipe?

Always check for the ‘ISI mark’ when buying a gas pipe from the market. This mark is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), an agency of the Government of India. It signifies that the pipe has passed the IS 9573 (Part 2): 2017 standard. Major companies like Indian Oil (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) recommend using only ISI-certified orange pipes. This mark guarantees that the pipe meets the required standards for gas pressure, heat resistance, and flexibility.

Why is using green or transparent pipes dangerous?

People often buy green or transparent (see-through) pipes from the market to save a little money. However, this can be a fatal mistake:

Green pipes: These are generally designed for water supply or drainage.
Transparent pipes: These are intended for low-pressure air or water.
If you pass LPG gas through them, these pipes will not be able to withstand the gas pressure and heat. Over time, they can corrode from the inside, weaken, and break, leading to gas leaks. This poses a severe risk of kitchen fires or cylinder explosions.
