Haven't received your ITR refund in your bank account yet? Check your live status online using these 2 easy methods..
ITR Refund Status: After filing their Income Tax Return (ITR), taxpayers—including salaried individuals—eagerly await their tax refund. In most cases, the Income Tax Department transfers the refund amount directly to the filer's registered bank account within a few weeks of verifying the return.
However, if your refund remains pending despite the passage of time, you can check its status from the comfort of your home; checking the ITR refund status is quite simple. Doing so will clarify when the money is expected to arrive or reveal any technical reasons for the delay. If your refund has not been received, taxpayers can check its current status using either of the two digital methods described below.
Check Status on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal
If your income tax refund has not been credited to your bank account on time, you can check your ITR refund status via the Income Tax e-Filing portal. This is the most secure method. A key advantage is that it provides a complete history of your tax filings.
Follow the steps below to check your ITR refund status:
First, visit the Income Tax Department's official e-filing website (incometax.gov.in). Click on the 'Login' button located at the top right of the homepage. Log in to your account using your PAN (User ID) and password. Once the dashboard opens, go to the main menu and select the option: e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns. A list of all the returns you have filed will appear. Select the relevant Assessment Year and click on 'View Details' next to it to see your live refund status.
Check Status via the TIN-NSDL Website
If you have forgotten your password or wish to check the status immediately without logging in, you can use the TIN-NSDL website as a quick method. You can follow the steps below on this website to check your ITR refund status:
Visit the official TIN-NSDL refund tracking webpage directly. Enter your valid PAN number in the box provided on the screen. Next, select the relevant assessment year (e.g., AY 2026-27). Enter the security captcha code correctly and click the 'Submit' button. Your current refund status will appear on the screen immediately.
Understand the Terms Displayed When Checking Refund Status
When checking the status, you may see certain technical terms on the screen. Their exact meanings are explained below so that you can take the appropriate next steps:
Refund Issued: This means the Income Tax Department has sent your refund amount to the bank. The amount will be credited to your account within the next 3 to 5 working days.
Refund Failed: This simply means your refund has been stalled due to a technical issue. This usually happens due to an incorrect bank account number or IFSC code, a mismatch between the bank account name and the PAN card details, or failure to link your PAN with Aadhaar. In such a case, you must visit the portal, provide the requested information, and submit a request for the refund to be reissued.
