Heatwave Alert: Schools Shut in Lucknow Due to Rising Temperatures; Check Updates from Delhi and Other Cities

Lucknow Summer Vacation: The district administration in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has taken a major decision in light of the intense heat and heatwave conditions prevailing in the city. The District Magistrate has declared summer vacations for schools affiliated with all educational boards, effective from May 22, 2026. This decision has been taken with the safety and health of the children in mind. The continuously rising temperatures and hot winds have caused significant distress to the public; in particular, it has become difficult for young children to venture outdoors.

A notice issued by the district administration clearly states that while the Meteorological Department has been issuing continuous warnings regarding the heatwave, some schools in the district remain open—a situation that could adversely affect the children’s health. The administration has directed all officials to strictly enforce this order. Additionally, children have been advised not to step out of their homes during the daytime to protect themselves from the intense hot winds.

School Timetables Revised from Delhi to UP

Given the intensifying heat, several states have released their complete schedules for school vacations. In Delhi-NCR, the decision has been made to keep schools closed from May 11 to June 30, 2026. However, remedial classes for students in grades 9, 10, and 12 are currently being conducted during the morning shift in Delhi’s government schools. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, summer vacations have been declared from May 20 to June 15. Schools will remain closed from June 1 to June 30 in Haryana, from May 17 to June 20 in Rajasthan, and from June 1 to June 20 in Bihar. In light of the persistently rising temperatures, parents are also supporting this decision.

Holidays Have Already Begun in Several States

The impact of the summer heat is clearly visible across South India and the eastern states. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, holidays have been declared from April 24 to June 11. Schools in Chhattisgarh remain closed from April 20 to June 15, while holidays in Odisha commenced as early as April 27. In several districts of West Bengal, holidays have been extended until May 31 in view of the severe heat. The Meteorological Department is continuously advising the public to remain vigilant. Doctors warn that intense sunlight and heatwaves tend to affect children’s bodies rapidly; therefore, exercising extra caution during this period is absolutely essential.

The Return of El Niño Could Exacerbate Difficulties

Scientists believe that El Niño conditions may return this year, although this has not yet been officially confirmed. Should this occur, temperatures across the country could rise even further. Furthermore, there are apprehensions regarding an increase in heatwave incidents and the possibility of a weak monsoon in several regions. This is precisely why governments and administrative bodies appear to be exercising heightened caution in advance. Decisions regarding school holidays have been taken with the safety of children in mind, aiming to protect them from the scorching heat and heatwaves.
