  • 2 cups idli rice

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves

For Tempering

  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 dried red chillies

How to Prepare Mini Idli Batter

Wash the rice, urad dal, and fenugreek seeds separately and soak them for about 4-5 hours. Grind the urad dal into a fluffy batter and grind the rice into a slightly coarse mixture. Combine both, add salt, and allow the batter to ferment overnight or for 8–10 hours until airy and risen.

Making the Mini Idlis

Grease mini idli moulds lightly with oil or ghee. Pour the fermented batter into the moulds and steam for about 8-10 minutes until cooked. Let them cool slightly before removing the idlis carefully.

How to Make Flavorful Sambar

Pressure cook the toor dal until soft and mash it well. In a pan, cook onions, shallots, tomatoes, carrot, and green chilli with turmeric and a little water until tender. Add tamarind pulp, sambar powder, salt, and mashed dal. Let the sambar simmer for 10-12 minutes so the flavors blend well.


Heat oil or ghee in a small pan for tempering. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, dried red chillies, and asafoetida. Pour this aromatic tempering into the simmering sambar and mix well.

Final Assembly

Place the mini idlis in serving bowls and pour hot sambar generously over them. Allow the idlis to soak for a couple of minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and enjoy the dish hot.
