If you still possess ₹2000 notes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued important information for you. The central bank has once again clarified that ₹2000 notes remain legal tender. This means they are legally recognized, and the RBI continues to accept them.

However, the RBI has advised those still holding ₹2000 notes to deposit or exchange them promptly to avoid any future inconvenience.

What has the RBI said regarding the ₹2000 note?

According to the RBI, the majority of ₹2000 denomination notes have already returned to the banking system. Nevertheless, some notes remain with the public.

The central bank has reiterated that:

  • ₹2000 notes remain legal tender.
  • The RBI will continue to accept them.
  • Facilities for depositing or exchanging the notes are available.
  • People are advised to take action soon.

Why was the ₹2000 note withdrawn?

The ₹2000 note was issued following the demonetization in November 2016. It was introduced into the market at that time to replace the old ₹500 and ₹1000 notes.

Later, as part of its currency management strategy, the RBI decided to gradually withdraw ₹2000 notes from circulation. The objective was to streamline the currency system.

Can the ₹2000 note be exchanged at bank branches?

No. According to the RBI, ₹2000 notes are no longer being exchanged at regular bank branches.

If you hold ₹2000 notes, you must use an authorized RBI Issue Office.

How can you deposit or exchange ₹2000 notes?

Method 1: Visit an RBI Regional Office

19 RBI Issue Offices across the country are accepting the notes.

You can:

Deposit the notes.
Have the amount credited to your bank account.

Method 2: Send via India Post

If there is no RBI office in your city, you can send the notes to the nearest RBI Issue Office via India Post.

You will also need to provide the necessary banking details for this.
