Kalpana Iyer reveals how BORROWED saree and beauty contest changed her life: 'I am grateful for every single moment'

Veteran actor and former model Kalpana Iyer has taken a nostalgic trip down memory lane by revisiting the event that transformed her life. Sharing a series of throwback photographs on social media, she recalled participating in the 1975 Navy Queen Beauty Contest, describing it as the moment that set her on the path to a successful career in modelling and films.

Looking back at the experience, Kalpana revealed that she entered the competition with limited resources. Despite those challenges, the pageant opened doors she had never imagined and introduced her to people who played an important role in shaping her future.

A borrowed saree marked a turning point

Kalpana shared that she took part in the contest wearing a borrowed saree and a mismatched outfit. She also remembered finishing as the first runner-up and meeting two women who helped change the course of her life.

She wrote, “In the Month of November 1975 I took part in The Navy Queen Beauty Contest ( Borrowed Saree , Unmatched Blouse & Petticoat, Kajal and lipstick and my Ohhh so Thin Physical Statistics.. and my 1 Scoring all Natural MY Straight and long beautiful Hair which ended below my Waistline… Well I was Selected The 1st Runner up to The Winner The Stunning and Beautiful Anna Bredemeyer (My Amma loved The Bredemeyer Sisters All her life) .. I met the lady who would change my life in ways I still can’t believe because all that happened from then on till 1978 happened because of her primarily and 1 more lady It was all so unreal and so very beautiful..” (sic)

Fashion opportunities arrived quickly

Following her success in the beauty contest, Kalpana said opportunities began arriving almost immediately. She revealed that she started appearing in major fashion shows and even received a significant assignment within a week after another model withdrew from an event.

Recalling those early opportunities, she shared, “I was part of Almost Every Fashion Show from then On and My first came to me within a week Because MS Tina Munim backed out and the Show was to be held within a week in Delhi and I was sent by Vimla to A Legend of her Times Esther Mathias for Training and Rehearsal well I am Grateful for All The Kindness and Belief All These Women Had In Me … There was no Looking Back.” She credited the encouragement and faith shown by industry veterans for giving her the confidence to pursue modelling as a full-time career.
