Tensions in the Middle East have impacted LPG supplies across the country. Amidst this, the government has taken several major decisions that directly affect LPG consumers. The central government has taken a significant step to boost LPG supply nationwide. Households that have access to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and have already obtained a PNG connection are now required to surrender their LPG connection within a specified timeframe. The government believes this move will make the gas distribution process more transparent, curb duplicate connections, and improve LPG access for families truly in need.

In recent years, PNG networks have expanded rapidly across many cities. Despite this, many families continue to use both PNG and LPG services. The government states that this places an additional burden on resources and the subsidy system. New rules have been implemented with this in mind.

What is the new 30-day rule?

According to the rules issued by the government, any domestic consumer who obtains a PNG connection for their home must surrender their LPG connection within 30 days. This rule applies to all major domestic LPG connections, including Indane, Bharatgas, and HP Gas. For instance, if a consumer receives a PNG connection on June 10, they must return their LPG connection within the next 30 days. After this fixed period, such consumers may face difficulties in obtaining LPG refills or related services. The government's focus is on promoting a "one household, one gas connection" policy.

Why did the government take this step?

This move aligns with the government's "One Household, One Gas Connection" vision. Officials observe that in many urban areas, people retain their LPG connections even after obtaining PNG connections, placing unnecessary strain on the gas distribution system. Through these new rules, the government aims to reduce duplicate connections, prevent the misuse of subsidies, and increase LPG supplies in areas where the PNG network has not yet reached. This is expected to make gas distribution more efficient and balanced.

What are the benefits for PNG users?

The government has introduced measures for the convenience of consumers. If a family relocates to an area where PNG facilities are unavailable, the process for re-obtaining an LPG connection has been simplified. Consumers can obtain a transfer voucher when surrendering their LPG connection; this document allows them to easily reactivate an LPG connection at their new location without having to go through the lengthy process of applying for a new connection.
