Bihar's Energy Minister, Shailesh Kumar (alias Bulo Mandal), stated that landlords can only charge tenants for electricity at rates fixed by the government. Action may be taken if complaints regarding overcharging or any other irregularities are received. He emphasized that the government's priority is to ensure that the benefits of electricity subsidies and other schemes reach all consumers. In line with this, instructions have been issued to ensure that people living in rented homes also receive the scheme's benefits.
**How to Avail the Electricity Subsidy Scheme**
* **Rule:** The subsidy benefit goes to the consumer in whose name the electricity connection is registered. Therefore, having a separate meter in one's own name is the best option.
* **Documents:** Applications can be submitted with a rental agreement and an Aadhaar card.
* **Subsidy Amount:** In certain areas of Bihar, consumers can avail the benefit of free electricity for up to 125 units.
* **Landlord's Role:** Landlords will no longer be able to charge excessive rates for subsidized electricity.
**How Tenants Can Get an Electricity Meter Installed in Their Name**
You can apply for a meter in your own name by visiting your nearest electricity office (DISCOM) or through the online portal by presenting your rental agreement.
