Penelope Milford dead: Coming Home Oscar-nominated star dies aged 77

Oscar-nominated star Penelope Milford has died. Her brother, Doug Milford, confirmed the sad news. Her cause of death was not announced.

Penelope was up for Best Supporting Actress in 1979 for her role as Vi Munson in Coming Home. She died in Saugerties, New York and was a household name in the 1970s and 80s thanks to her acting career.

She bagged a successful stint on Broadway and o-starred alongside Richard Gere in the hit play Richard Farina: Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone. Penelope, who was from St Louis, Missouri, went on to secure a number of roles on the big screen.

The actress starred in Norman Mailer’s Maidstone in 1970 and Ken Russell’s 1977 biopic Valentino. Penelope's starring role came in war drama Coming Home where she appeared alongside Angelina Jolie’s dad Jon Voight, Jane Fonda and Bruce Dern.

It became one of the top films of the year in 1978 and reached huge commercial success as well as critical acclaim. At the 36th Golden Globe Awards, the film landed six nominations including for the Best Motion Picture in the Drama category.

While at the 51st Academy Awards, it received eight nominations including for the Best Picture and Penelope's Best Supporting Actress. Coming Home ended up winning Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor and Actress.

Penelope's next film credit came with Franco Zeffirelli’s Endless Love in 1981. She decided to change up her career onto the small screen where she landed a number of notable roles.

The actress appeared alongside Henry Fonda, Cloris Leachman and Timothy Hutton in the Emmy-winning TV play The Oldest Living Graduate.
