Raja Shivaji OTT Release: When and where to watch Riteish Deshmukh's record-breaking historical drama
Missed Raja Shivaji in theatres? Raja Shivaji OTT release is finally here. After a successful theatrical run, Riteish Deshmukh's historical action drama is now available to stream on Netflix. The film, based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, can now be watched from home in both Hindi and Marathi.
Announcing the Raja Shivaji OTT release, Netflix shared the film's official poster on Instagram with the caption, "Vidroh karne aa rahein hai Raje. Watch Raja Shivaji, out now, in Marathi and Hindi, on Netflix." The digital release is expected to bring the film to a much larger audience after its impressive performance at the box office.
The Raja Shivaji OTT Release comes after the film emerged as one of the biggest successes in Marathi cinema. Directed by Riteish Deshmukh, the film was produced by Genelia Deshmukh and Jyoti Deshpande under the banners of Mumbai Film Company and Jio Studios.
Riteish Deshmukh plays the lead role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film also features Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amole Gupte and Genelia Deshmukh in important roles.
Made on a reported budget of Rs 75 crore, Raja Shivaji received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising its performances while others criticised its visual effects. Despite this, the film performed strongly at the box office, earning more than Rs 117 crore worldwide.
With this collection, Raja Shivaji became the highest-grossing Marathi film ever, surpassing the lifetime worldwide earnings of Sairat. The achievement is considered significant as the film did not receive an overseas theatrical release, unlike many major Indian films.
The film's visual effects became a topic of discussion after its release. Actor Abhishek Bachchan defended the VFX, saying the film was made on a limited budget and should not be compared with high-budget productions that spend significantly more on visual effects.
Speaking about the film's success, Riteish Deshmukh said the biggest reward was seeing audiences connect emotionally with the story. He shared that many families watched the film together, with some bringing their grandparents and young children to experience the story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the big screen. According to the actor, the audience's emotional response meant more to him than the box office numbers.
