Shivarajkumar–Puneeth Rajkumar nepotism remark: Kichcha Sudeep issues clarification
Bengaluru: Actor Kichcha Sudeep’s remarks on nepotism made during the press conference of the film “Mango Pachcha” have gone viral on social media.
Following the backlash, Sudeep has issued a clarification, highlighting his respect for Shivarajkumar (Shivanna) and the late Puneeth Rajkumar (Appu).
What happened? At the press meet, Sudeep responded sharply to a question on nepotism, asking whether such questions are ever directed at the children of Rajkumar family members. He said that Shivarajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar should not be seen through the lens of nepotism, but rather as individuals who earned success through talent.
He questioned why such scrutiny is not applied uniformly, citing examples from other industries as well. He added that if a person has talent and is accepted by audiences, they succeed regardless of background. He also stated that many members of film families do not enter cinema unless they have interest and ability, and that success in the Kannada film industry is driven by artistic merit rather than nepotism.
His comments triggered criticism from some Shivarajkumar fans on social media, who demanded an apology.
Sudeep’s clarificationIn a recent interview with former Bigg Boss contestant Chakravarthy Chandrachud, Sudeep clarified his statement, saying:
He emphasized that he holds deep respect for Shivarajkumar and fondly addresses him as “Shivanna.” He said both Shivarajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar are outstanding talents who have inspired millions and earned massive fan following purely through their work.
Sudeep further stated that if nepotism alone determined success, all star kids would have become stars, but that is not the case. He said that in Karnataka cinema, talent is what matters most, and audiences accept artists based on merit. He reiterated that there is no stronger example of talent than Shivarajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar, whose success, according to him, is rooted in skill rather than nepotism.
With this clarification, Sudeep has effectively sought to put an end to the controversy.
