When fruits are turned into juice, much of that fibre disappears. The result is a drink that may contain concentrated sugar without the same filling effect as eating actual fruit.

People often consume far more sugar through juice than they would by eating whole fruits naturally.



Packaged Juices May Contain Added Sugar

Many commercial juices include extra sweeteners, flavour enhancers, or concentrates to improve taste and shelf life.

Even products labelled “natural” or “fruit-based” can sometimes contain surprisingly high sugar levels.

This is one reason some health experts compare certain fruit juices to soft drinks when consumed excessively.


Fresh Juice Is Usually Better

Fresh homemade juice without added sugar is generally considered healthier than heavily processed packaged versions.


However, even fresh juice should ideally complement whole fruits rather than replace them entirely.

Eating the fruit itself often provides better satiety and more balanced nutrition overall.


Smoothies Work Differently

Smoothies usually retain more fibre because blended fruit pulp remains inside the drink.

That makes them more filling and nutritionally balanced compared to strained juices in many cases.

Still, portion sizes and added ingredients matter heavily.



Marketing Shapes Health Perception

Fruit juice became strongly associated with healthy lifestyles through decades of advertising.

But modern nutrition awareness is encouraging people to read labels more carefully instead of assuming all fruit-based drinks are automatically healthy.

Sometimes the simplest option remains the best one: eating fresh fruit directly instead of drinking processed versions of it.
