Understanding the Effects of Digital Surveillance

Parents today can easily track their children's locations thanks to digital technology. However, this constant oversight often blurs the line between ensuring safety and invading privacy. Such practices not only increase anxiety among parents but also instill fear in young adults, making them reluctant to make independent choices or embrace risks. This concern has been highlighted in a recent survey that merits further exploration.

**Digital Monitoring: A Source of Trouble for Parents and Young Adults**
A study from the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital indicates that parents in various countries, including the US and parts of Europe, are keeping tabs on their adult children for safety. While this may seem reassuring, it often exacerbates anxiety. Young adults under such scrutiny are increasingly hesitant to make decisions or take risks.

**Tracking Trends Among Parents**

The findings reveal that around 52% of parents in the US monitor the locations of their adult children (ages 18–25) who are in college, utilizing mobile devices or applications. Notably, daughters are monitored more than sons. This behavior raises concerns as it intrudes into the daily lives of these young adults. Moreover, parents have begun to inquire about significant aspects of their children's lives, including academic performance and medical appointments.
