What happened that night didn't just cost three young servicemen their lives; it permanently changed how the US handles nuclear safety and left behind a grave so unusual that it still gets referred to as the most dangerous burial site in the country.

In January 1961, nearly five years after Winston Churchill's famous warning about an "iron curtain" dividing Europe, a small military reactor was quietly operating in the Idaho desert, about 40 miles west of Idaho Falls. Known as SL-1, the reactor was designed to power remote radar stations built to detect Soviet aircraft or missiles, offering a cheaper, less risky alternative to hauling diesel fuel to isolated outposts.
On January 3, three operators including Army Spc. John Arthur Byrnes, Navy Seabee Richard Carlton Legg, and SP4 Richard McKinley , returned to the reactor after a 10-day holiday break, unaware they were walking into the country's first fatal nuclear accident .
The explosion that started it all
According to Argon Electronics, a firm that builds nuclear-hazard training simulators, the blast that night had enough force to launch the reactor's 26,000-pound core more than nine feet into the air, generating pressure that "forced the plugs at the top of the reactor open and fire the control rods like missiles into the ceiling." The company added that the reactor room instantly filled with steam, contaminated water, and fragments of radioactive material.
Byrnes and Legg died almost instantly. McKinley was still alive when rescuers reached the site over 90 minutes later, but he died shortly after being placed in an ambulance, according to Find a Grave. He was only 27.
An Atomic Energy Commission investigation later found that the disaster was triggered when an operator pulled the reactor's central control rod too far out of its housing, according to NASA, causing the reactor to go supercritical within milliseconds.
