The month of Sawan is considered ideal for worshipping Lord Shiva, as it is dear to Mahadev. Offering *Belpatra* (leaves of the wood apple tree) is an essential part of worshipping Lord Bholenath; without it, the worship is considered incomplete. Sometimes, people inadvertently offer *Belpatra* that are cut, broken, or torn—often due to a lack of good-quality leaves or simply out of ignorance. This raises the question: how does one identify the correct *Belpatra* for Shiva worship, and what are the rules for plucking them?
*Belpatra* refers to the leaves of the *Bel* (wood apple) tree.
A *Belpatra* consists of three leaflets; for worship, you should select a leaf that has all three leaflets intact.
Do not use a *Belpatra* for worship if it does not have three leaflets.
The leaves should be green; avoid using yellow, mottled, or spotted leaves.
Avoid leaves where one leaflet is disproportionately large while the other two are misshapen.
What to do if *Belpatra* is unavailable?
If you do not have *Belpatra* for worship, there is no need to worry. *Belpatra* does not become impure; you can pick up a *Belpatra* that has already been offered to the *Shivling*, wash it with water, and then offer it to Lord Shiva.
Rules for plucking *Belpatra*
If you need to pluck *Belpatra* for Shiva worship, first offer your salutations to the *Bel* tree before plucking the leaves.
Do not pluck *Belpatra* on *Ashtami*, *Navami*, *Trayodashi*, *Chaturdashi*, or *Amavasya* (the new moon day) of any month.
Avoid plucking *Belpatra* during the transition period when one lunar day (*Tithi*) is ending and another is beginning.
Significance of *Belpatra*
According to the *Shiva Purana*, those who offer *Belpatra* to Lord Shiva during the month of Sawan earn spiritual merit equivalent to performing the *Kanyadaan* (ritual gifting of a daughter in marriage) of ten million maidens. When Lord Shiva consumed the poison that emerged from the churning of the ocean, he began to suffer its adverse effects. In response, Goddess Parvati, along with other gods and goddesses, performed *Jalabhishek* (ritual bathing with water) on him and offered him *Belpatra* (leaves of the wood apple tree) to consume. This neutralized the poison's effect. Since then, *Belpatra* has become dear to Lord Shiva.
