From FOMO to JOMO: The Mindset Shift Everyone Needs
A few years ago, cancelling plans almost felt illegal. You'd come up with an excuse, apologise three times, and still spend the evening wondering what everyone else was doing. Even if you were exhausted, staying home somehow felt like you were missing the "real" fun.
Fast forward to today, and something has changed. People are cancelling plans because they genuinely need rest. They're deleting apps over the weekend, choosing sleep over parties, reading books instead of replying instantly, and proudly posting pictures of... absolutely nothing.
Strangely enough, they're happier. If you've ever looked at your calendar and secretly wished for a day with no plans, congratulations, you've already met JOMO, even if you didn't know its name.
Then social media arrived and quietly made that feeling ten times worse. Now, you don't just know what your closest friends are doing; you know what your classmates, colleagues, influencers, and even complete strangers are doing every hour of the day.
Someone is travelling, someone got engaged, and someone bought their dream car; someone is at a concert you've wanted to attend for months. And you're just... folding laundry. The problem isn't that other people are having fun. The problem is that we're comparing our most ordinary moments to everyone else's best ones.
No traffic. No crowded cafés. No pretending you're having fun just because everyone else seems to be. Somewhere along the way, many of us realised we weren't always saying "yes" because we wanted to. Sometimes, we were saying yes because we didn't want to feel left out. That's a very different reason.
There's a huge difference between making memories and collecting proof that you were there. JOMO is simply about giving yourself permission to choose. Sometimes, the answer is yes. Sometimes, it's no. Both are perfectly okay.
Now, the definition of success looks a little different. A full night's sleep. Dinner without checking your phone. A Sunday that isn't planned minute by minute. An evening when nobody expects anything from you. Those things don't usually go viral. But they do make life feel lighter.
They happen when you're laughing with your family over dinner, finishing a book you've been putting off, taking an evening walk with your favourite playlist, or simply enjoying the rare feeling that you don't have to be anywhere else. Because sometimes, the best place to be... is exactly where you already are.

We Didn't Always Feel This Way
Growing up, missing out felt like losing. If your friends went somewhere without you, you felt left out. If everyone was talking about a new café, a movie, or a trend and you hadn't experienced it yet, it almost felt like you were late to life. Then social media arrived and quietly made that feeling ten times worse. Now, you don't just know what your closest friends are doing; you know what your classmates, colleagues, influencers, and even complete strangers are doing every hour of the day.

The Day Staying Home Stopped Feeling Boring
Here's something funny. Remember when staying home on a Saturday night sounded depressing? Now it's become a reward. Fresh bedsheets, a comfort show you've already watched five times, food delivered right to your door, and your phone on Do Not Disturb. No traffic. No crowded cafés. No pretending you're having fun just because everyone else seems to be. Somewhere along the way, many of us realised we weren't always saying "yes" because we wanted to. Sometimes, we were saying yes because we didn't want to feel left out. That's a very different reason.
JOMO Isn't About Becoming Antisocial
One of the biggest misunderstandings about JOMO is that it means avoiding people. It doesn't. Go to the birthday party, take the trip, dance at the concert, and laugh until your stomach hurts. But don't go simply because you're afraid someone else will post about it tomorrow. There's a huge difference between making memories and collecting proof that you were there. JOMO is simply about giving yourself permission to choose. Sometimes, the answer is yes. Sometimes, it's no. Both are perfectly okay.
Maybe Peace Is the New Luxury
For years, being busy felt impressive. A packed calendar meant you were important. Replying to messages at midnight meant you were productive. Saying yes to everything meant you were "living life".Now, the definition of success looks a little different. A full night's sleep. Dinner without checking your phone. A Sunday that isn't planned minute by minute. An evening when nobody expects anything from you. Those things don't usually go viral. But they do make life feel lighter.
The Joy of Missing Out
Maybe the biggest lesson JOMO teaches us is this: Life isn't a competition to attend the most events or collect the most memories. Some of the happiest moments don't come with photos, captions, or location tags. They happen when you're laughing with your family over dinner, finishing a book you've been putting off, taking an evening walk with your favourite playlist, or simply enjoying the rare feeling that you don't have to be anywhere else. Because sometimes, the best place to be... is exactly where you already are.
