Women Doctors Now Lead Three Major Delhi Hospitals — Here's the Inspiring Journey Behind Their Success
For the first time, the command of Delhi’s three largest central government hospitals has been entrusted simultaneously to three women doctors. This development has brought new recognition to the growing leadership roles of women within the healthcare sector.
A significant shift has been witnessed in Delhi’s government hospitals—institutions upon which thousands of patients rely daily for medical treatment. The leadership of these hospitals will now rest in the hands of women doctors. This marks the first instance in which the responsibility for three of the capital’s major central government hospitals has been assigned concurrently to three women doctors. This move is being hailed as a historic step within the healthcare domain.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently issued new appointment orders. Under these orders, Dr. Akhilandeshwari Prasad has been appointed as the Director of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Meanwhile, Dr. Himani Ahluwalia has been entrusted with the leadership of Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Dr. Kavita Rani Sharma has taken charge of Safdarjung Hospital and Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC).
A Record Set for the First Time
According to media reports, Delhi’s government hospitals are counted among the largest and busiest medical facilities in the country. Patients arrive here for treatment not only from Delhi but also from various other states across the nation. Consequently, leading these institutions is not considered an easy task.
Now, for the very first time, the command of three major hospitals has simultaneously passed into the hands of women doctors. This decision by the Ministry of Health is being viewed as a major achievement within the medical fraternity. Many experts believe that this will pave the way for more women doctors to step into leadership roles in the future.
Dr. Akhilandeshwari Prasad Brings Nearly Three Decades of Experience
The journey of Dr. Akhilandeshwari Prasad, who has assumed this new responsibility, has been truly inspiring. She completed her MBBS studies at Lady Hardinge Medical College, where she was awarded a gold medal. Subsequently, she obtained her MD degree in Radio-diagnosis from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
Dr. Prasad has been associated with RML Hospital and ABVIMS for over 30 years. During this period, she discharged several key responsibilities as a doctor, educator, and administrator. She has also previously served as the Head of the Department of Radio Diagnosis.
She states that providing improved facilities to patients at the hospital will be her foremost priority. Additionally, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential services and further strengthening the hospital’s administrative framework are also integral parts of her agenda.
Patients to Receive Enhanced Facilities
Upon assuming her new responsibilities, Dr. Prasad outlined plans to work on several key initiatives. Her objective is to provide patients at the hospital with superior and more expedited services. To this end, preparations are underway to fully operationalize the Super-Specialty Block, modernize the hospital’s infrastructure, and promote digital systems. In the near future, efforts will also be directed toward making hospital services more digitally oriented, thereby reducing reliance on paper-based processes.
Major Responsibilities Assigned to Dr. Himani Ahluwalia and Dr. Kavita Rani Sharma
While Dr. Himani Ahluwalia serves as a Senior Professor in the Department of Physiology, Dr. Kavita Rani Sharma is recognized as an experienced specialist in the Department of Anesthesia. Dr. Kavita Rani Sharma had previously been assigned the additional charge of Director of Safdarjung Hospital in March. Now, with her permanent appointment, she has been entrusted with the overall responsibility for the hospital’s administration. Meanwhile, Dr. Himani Ahluwalia is set to assume charge as the new Director of Lady Hardinge Medical College starting July 9.
