Aryna Sabalenka became the latest player to suffer a gigantic upset at the French Open, enduring her earliest defeat at a Grand Slam tournament in two years. The world No. 1 looked on her way to a comfortable victory when she led 25th seed Diana Shnaider by a set and 4-1. But the Belarusian fell apart in the windy conditions, losing 3-6 7-5 6-0.

It was reminiscent of Sabalenka's error-strewn performance in last year's final, which saw her lose to Coco Gauff. The four-time Major winner looked increasingly frustrated as she let victory slip through her fingers, with Shnaider winning 11 of the last 12 games, and the last 10 in a row. There are now no Grand Slam champions left in the men's and women's singles draws.

Sabalenka's clay season has been marred by brutal three-set defeats, and that was no different in Paris. In Madrid, she lost to Hailey Baptiste in a final-set tiebreak. In Rome, she let a set and break lead slip against Sorana Cirstea, losing 2-6 6-3 7-5.

And it was the same story on a very windy day in Paris, as the top seed and last Grand Slam champion standing in singles struggled in the tricky conditions. Sabalenka came storming out of the gates and let 5-1. She let Shnaider back into the first set but still served it out at the second time of asking.

In set two, the 28-year-old hurtled into a double-break lead, but her game broke down in the blustery conditions, and Shnaider forced a decider as Sabalenka complained at her box. The top seed hit 21 unforced errors in the second set, compared to just nine from her opponent.

And things went from bad to worse in the decider. Sabalenka sprayed errors and checked out. Trailing 0-3, she crouched on the ground with her head bowed and had no answers for the Russian.
