Ben Stokes Frustrated With Question Regarding Bazball's Failure After Series Loss To India: 'What does it mean?'

England captain Ben Stokes has firmly dismissed assertions of a lack of ruthlessness in their recent encounters with India , following their first Test series defeat in the ' Bazball ' era. India's decisive victory in the fourth Test, clinching a five-wicket win and securing an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the series, has triggered substantial concerns regarding England's approach to Test cricket.

The much-lauded 'Bazball' strategy , renowned for its aggressive ethos since its inception in 2022, is now facing intense scrutiny over perceived inflexibility and tactical deficiencies. The series loss is poised to instigate a re-evaluation of their strategic outlook, fueling discussions regarding the efficacy of 'Bazball' in contemporary Test cricket.

Presently occupying the seventh spot in the World Test Championship points table with a mere 19% percentage, England's prospects of staging a recovery in time to contend for a final spot in 2025 have been severely compromised.

When queried about England's alleged lack of ruthlessness against India, Stokes retorted, "Ruthlessness? What is it? How does it manifest itself?

"Everyone goes into the game with their best intentions; when it doesn't pay off, people say we're not ruthless, when it does, they say we are," Stokes said in the post-match media conference.

Stokes underscored the subjective and often misconstrued nature of the concept of ruthlessness. In the fourth Test against India, England found themselves in a precarious situation during the second innings, succumbing to a flurry of dismissals that prompted a defensive stance, culminating in their collapse for a mere 145 runs in 53.5 overs.

"I don't really understand it. That's from my point of view; we try to do what we think is the best way to win a game. It can be a throwaway comment when people say we're not ruthless enough. What does it mean?" he questioned.

Under Stokes' captaincy, succeeding Joe Root, England's 'Bazball' philosophy has yielded triumphs against formidable adversaries such as New Zealand, South Africa, and Pakistan. Notably, in the preceding year's Ashes series, England staged a remarkable resurgence to salvage a 2-2 draw.

"Obviously we want to win every game we play, and win every series. This is the first we have lost, but we will be involved in plenty more series going forward," Stokes said.
