Commonwealth Games: IOA issues health advisory amid Glasgow chill
New Delhi : With Glasgow hit by a sudden spell of cold, cloudy and rain-soaked weather, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the country’s chef-de-mission office have advised athletes to take preventive measures to minimise the risk of upper respiratory and airborne infections during the Commonwealth Games.
Sources told TOI that athletes have been verbally briefed at their respective hotels, with officials urging them to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure, dress warmly and wear face masks while travelling or in crowded indoor spaces. Frequent hand washing has also been recommended as an added precaution.
The advisory comes after temperatures dropped sharply over the past two days, making conditions considerably colder, especially during the evenings. A few Indian athletes have reported mild cold symptoms, including runny noses, but none has required hospitalisation.
Officials stressed there is no cause for alarm, while underlining the importance of preventive care with several medal events still to come. “It is quite cold and cloudy here,” Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra said, reflecting the challenging weather conditions athletes have encountered in Glasgow.
