Emma Raducanu could lose Wimbledon seeding if controversial new rule is introduced
A proposed rule change requiring Wimbledon to reduce its seeding from 32 to 16 could have a major impact on Emma Raducanu's future at SW19. The British star will likely be seeded at No. 32 for this summer's tournament, which begins on June 29, but the potential new rule could see her lose her spot and be forced to lock horns with some of the game's biggest stars in the early rounds.
The 2021 US Open champion, 23, has enjoyed a resurgence of late after a tough start to 2026, reaching the final of the Queen's Club, where she was beaten in straight sets by Donna Vekic of Croatia. During Francisco Cerundolo's victory over Tommy Paul in the men's final at Queen's, commentators Andrew Castle and John Lloyd discussed Wimbledon seeding. Seeds for the event are traditionally the 32 highest-ranked players in the singles draws, arranged to prevent top players from meeting in the initial rounds.
Castle and Lloyd both believe there needs to be a shake-up, scaling the seeding down from 32 to 16. This could have a major effect on Raducanu, who is currently No. 32 in the world, if she fails to rise through the ranks in the near future.
Castle said: "I think there should be 16 [seeds] and then we would have better matches in the first week, guaranteed." Lloyd concurred, adding that it would mean there would be some "interesting" first and second round matches.
