For others, who may be among the greatest the sport has ever seen, there are those who have shown up for multiple tournaments and continue to be available when their team needs them most.

Lionel Messi holds the record for the most World Cup appearances with 26 appearances. He has played across five tournaments from 2006 to 2022 and the Argentinian finally completed his football journey by lifting the world cup in 2022.


2. Lothar Matthäus (Germany) – 25 Appearances

German legend Lothar Matthäus has appeared in five world cups from 1982 to 1998. The German midfielder is known for his tactical intelligence and fearless leadership. He played a key role in their 1990 World Cup triumph.

3. Miroslav Klose (Germany) – 24 Appearances

Miroslav Klose is mostly known for being the all time leading scorer in World Cup history. He has made four world cup appearances from 2002 to 2014 and helped a lot in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph.


4. Paolo Maldini (Italy) – 23 Appearances

Paolo Maldini represented Italy in four World Cups from 1990 to 2002. He is widely remembered as one of football’s best defenders and is known for his leadership and consistency which made him the cornerstone of the Italian national team.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 22 Appearances

6. Diego Maradona (Argentina) – 21 Appearances

The Argentinian legend has played across four World Cups from 1982 to 1994 and has appeared a grand total of 21 times. He is known for his excellent ball handling skills and is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest.

7. Uwe Seeler (Germany) – 21 Appearances

Uwe Seeler was one of Germany’s earliest football superstars. Renowned for his heading ability, technique and leadership, he represented West Germany across four World Cups.He became the first player in history to score in four separate World Cup tournaments and came close to winning the trophy in 1966 when Germany lost the final to England.

Poland defender Wladyslaw Zmuda may not be the most famous name on this list, but his World Cup consistency was exceptional.

Former France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris enjoyed a remarkable international career and became one of the most trusted captains in French football history. He featured in four World Cups and was a key figure in France’s triumph at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
