Falling Off a Cliff

This is one of the most commonly heard tyre-related expressions in Formula 1 and refers to a sudden and dramatic loss of tyre performance. Once tyres ‘fall off a cliff’, grip disappears quickly and drivers usually cannot recover the tyre performance. Teams are forced to call the driver into the pits earlier than planned for fresh tyres.

Fastest Lap

This is the quickest lap completed by any driver during a Grand Prix. Only one fastest lap is recorded for each race and drivers compete for the DHL Fastest Lap Award over the season. Between 2019 and 2024, drivers earned one championship point for setting the fastest lap if they finished inside the top 10. From 2025, this bonus point was removed, although the fastest lap statistics remain significant.

FIA

FIA stands for the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and is Formula 1’s governing body. The FIA is responsible for creating and updating sporting regulations, ensuring safety standards, appointing race officials and stewards, investigating incidents during race weekends, and regulating all FIA World Championships. Every major sporting decision in Formula 1 ultimately falls under the FIA.

FIA Formula 1 World Championship

This is the official name of Formula 1’s premier racing championship. ‘Formula’ refers to the common set of technical rules every team must follow. ‘One’ refers to the highest category of single-seater motorsport. The championship consists of multiple Grand Prix held across the world and drivers compete for the Driver’s Championship, while teams compete for the Constructor’s Championship.
