F1 Glossary, Letter I: Four Important Terms Every Fan Should Know

Formula 1 has a unique vocabulary that helps explain the technical and strategic side of the sport. The official Formula 1 glossary introduces us to four terms starting with the letter ‘I’ and these terms are commonly used during practice, qualifying and races making them essential for every Formula 1 fan to understand.

In-lap

An In-lap is the lap a driver completes when returning to the pit lane and marks the end of a stint before the car enters the pits. Drivers often push hard during an in-lap to minimise the time lost before a pit stop and teams monitor this lap as a part of their race strategy. A well-executed in-lap can improve a driver’s overall race position after a tyre change.

Installation Lap

An installation lap is a lap completed when a driver leaves the garage, drives around the circuit and returns to the pit without beginning a competitive run. The teams use this lap to check that every system on the car is working correctly and engineers use this opportunity to verify components such as electronics, brakes and power unit systems before the session gets underway.
