India Likely to Pick Sri Lanka Test Squad Soon; Fitness Calls on Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana
After some heavy dose of white-ball cricket, the Indian team will shift their focus on the ICC World Test Championship now with the Sri Lanka tour that begins next month. The one-off match against Afghanistan has been Indian team’s only Test match this year so far. However, it wasn’t part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle. The two-match Test series with Sri Lanka will be India’s first of the WTC 2025-27 since the South Africa series at home last year.
The selection committee will be meeting soon to finalise the squad for the tour. These two Tests are vital for the Indian team as they hope to revive their bid to make it to the WTC final. The Shubman Gill-led side has already endured a 0-2 series defeat at home to South Africa.
Washington, meanwhile, missed the third ODI against England with a hamstring injury and was replaced in the squad by Harsh Dubey. The presence of several left-handers in the Sri Lanka side could prompt the selectors to consider offspinning allrounder Saransh Jain, who was impressive for India A in the second four-day game against Sri Lanka A in Galle where he picked a combined six wickets and scored 70* in the first innings.
The selectors are awaiting a final fitness report for Washington before making their decision. Washington could likely be added to the squad subject to fitness, and in case he is available only for the second Test, he will be added as the 16th member.
Akash Deep, who played a stellar role in the 2025 England away series is still recuperating from stress fracture, has just started his 'Return To Play' protocols. "Akash is bowling around 12-15 balls a day as per instructions. He is still some time away from attaining his full fitness," said a BCCI source.

The Question Marks
The biggest question marks are around the fitness of Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana. Rana is yet to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered in the middle of the T20I series in England. Rana had returned to action in July after missing the 2026 T20 World Cup and the IPL with a knee injury. His last Test was against Australia in Adelaide in December 2024.You may also like

What's Jasprit Bumrah's fitness update?
Senior speedster Jasprit Bumrah, who had missed the final ODI against England at Lord's due to an impact injury, is also expected to appear for a fitness Test. In case of Bumrah, if he is not available then the pace attack will comprise Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna.Akash Deep, who played a stellar role in the 2025 England away series is still recuperating from stress fracture, has just started his 'Return To Play' protocols.
