Indian flavour at glittering 2026 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony
GLASGOW: The jingle of ‘ghungroos’ — anklets strung with tiny metallic bells — blended with singer Callum Beattie’s rendition of ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’ as six Indian dancers lit up the OVO Hydro during Thursday’s opening ceremony of the 23rd Commonwealth Games.
The ‘ Parade of Nations ’ came early in the show, introducing each participating country and its athletes. With Scotland home to a sizeable South Asian community, India was clearly among the crowd favourites. Mirabai Chanu , carrying the tricolour and Lovlina Borgohain, bearing the King’s Baton, led the Indian contingent into the arena to roaring applause.
