New Zealand cricket legend Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to one of the most successful careers in the history of the BLACKCAPS.
Regarded as New Zealand’s most prolific all-format run-scorer and one of the country’s greatest-ever batters, Williamson leaves international cricket after a remarkable 16-year journey filled with records, leadership achievements, and memorable performances.
The 35-year-old represented New Zealand in 378 international matches across all formats and finishes his career as the nation’s highest run-scorer in international cricket. Williamson accumulated 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries, cementing his place among the greatest batters of the modern era.
Reflecting on his decision, Williamson said the time was right to move on after careful thought and consideration.
“I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear that now is the right time.
“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I gave it everything in every match I played for New Zealand.
“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right, and I feel fortunate to be able to step away on my own terms.
“I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent and a genuine desire to achieve something special with this New Zealand team.
“It’s a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will always hold a special place in my heart.”
As New Zealand’s Test captain, Williamson led the BLACKCAPS in 40 matches, securing 22 victories, suffering 10 defeats, and drawing eight games. He became the country’s second-most successful Test captain behind Stephen Fleming, who recorded 28 Test wins.
In One Day Internationals, Williamson captained New Zealand in 91 matches and guided the team to 46 victories. His record in T20 Internationals was equally impressive, with 39 wins from 75 matches, making him the most successful New Zealand captain in the format.
