After drawing the 5-Test series against England 1-1 in the second match, the Indian cricket team gears up for the third encounter in Rajkot. The Saurashtra Cricket Association plans to honour two Indian Test cricket superstars – Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja – during the event at the venue.
While Jadeja remains part of the current setup, Pujara's absence from the squad despite his stellar performance in the Ranji Trophy has raised eyebrows.
As discussions about Pujara's potential Test return gain traction within the cricketing fraternity, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has his focus on the batter, albeit for a different reason.
"The Indian players have gone back home and will be reuniting for the next Test match in Rajkot. Rajkot is the home of Cheteshwar Pujara. A certified Indian legend who recently concluded his 100 Test matches. We'll be playing in his place. Ravindra Jadeja, Saurashtra. The Rajkot stadium is his home ground, but he is from Jamnagar. Let's wait and watch if Cheteshwar Pujara invites everyone to his home for dinner," Ashwin remarked on his YouTube channel.
It's worth noting that during the 2016 Test series against England at home, Pujara had extended an invitation to the entire team for dinner at his Rajkot residence. However, the current scenario differs as Pujara finds himself out of India's Test squad this time around.
The Test specialist batter's last appearance for India dates back to the World Test Championship final in July 2023. Since then, Shubman Gill has assumed Pujara's coveted No. 3 spot.
Although Gill's position was also under scrutiny before the second Test, his century in Vizag has solidified his stance once again.
