Monaco Grand Prix result changed as star stripped of podium finish after successful appeal

Isack Hadjar has been stripped of his first Red Bull podium days after the conclusion of the Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine's successful appeal. The stewards have rescinded two five-second penalties given to Pierre Gasly during the race which restores him to third place, dropping his fellow Frenchman Hadjar down to fourth in the final classification.

Gasly was one of several drivers penalised in the race for speeding in the pit lane. However, he was adamant that he had used his speed limiter in time and was distraught at having been stripped of third place and not getting the chance to stand on the podium. Not long after the end of the race, his Alpine team confirmed it had requested a Right of Review from the FIA.

That hearing was held on Thursday in Barcelona, where it was quickly established that the Alpine Right of Review was admissible because significant, relevant and new evidence had been introduced. Formula One Management, as the official timekeepers of the sport, provided evidence that the distance between the timing loops used to calculate the speed of cars was not accurate and so overestimated the speed of Gasly's car, and it seems several others, during the Grand Prix.

But as the only team to request a Right of Review, Gasly's penalties are the only ones that were subject to change. And after the second part of the hearing was held later on Thursday, it was confirmed on Friday morning that Alpine had been successful and that Gasly's third place had been reinstated.

An Alpine team statement read: "We welcome the decision made by the FIA to deem our Right of Review as admissible following the final classification of last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. As a result, the stewards have rescinded the two five-second penalties imposed on car number 10 [Gasly], which reinstates the team's third place finish.

"We would like to thank the FIA and Formula One Management for its transparency and co-operation throughout the Right of Review process and for reaching this decision. The team's focus is now very much on this weekend's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix and striving for the best possible result with both of its cars."

Explaining the decision to rescind Gasly's penalties, the stewards said: "Following the acceptance of the petition, the finding of its admissibility and compliance with the International Sporting Code, the stewards' sole task is to determine if Car 10 exceeded the speed limit of 60 km/h in the pit lane. We determine that it did not.

"In this case, the stewards unanimously make their determinations with the required level of comfortable satisfaction, however the evidence, in our view, approaches that of beyond reasonable doubt. We determine that the penalties be rescinded, the five seconds added to the elapsed race time of Car 10 shall be removed, and the classification shall be amended accordingly."
