New controversy on radar after coach claims on role mismatch post-employment in BCCI

India men's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is reportedly considering stepping away from the national team setup after the ongoing white-ball tour of England due to uncertainty surrounding his responsibilities within the support staff.

 

According to PTI, the former Netherlands captain has informed the BCCI of his desire to return to franchise cricket after his expected transition into the specialist fielding coach's role did not materialise. While reports had earlier linked his possible exit to personal reasons, the latest developments suggest dissatisfaction over his role is the primary factor.

 

The BCCI is understood to be interested in retaining the 45-year-old, although his future may depend on whether head coach Gautam Gambhir can persuade him to continue.

 

Fielding coach promise never came through

 

Ten Doeschate joined the Indian coaching setup in 2024 on Gambhir's recommendation after the duo worked together successfully at Kolkata Knight Riders. He arrived as an assistant coach alongside Abhishek Nayar but was reportedly assured that he would eventually become India's specialist fielding coach.

 

However, T Dilip retained that position after receiving a one-year extension following the 2025 Champions Trophy, leaving ten Doeschate without a clearly defined area of responsibility. Explaining the situation, a senior BCCI source told PTI,

 

"You have (Sitanshu) Kotak as the batting coach and there's Gauti (Gambhir) himself to look after the batters. Morne (Morkel) is in charge of pacers and Sairaj (Bahutule) looks after the spinners. When Tendo was brought on board, he was promised the fielding coach's job."
