New York Tightens Security For T20 World Cup India-Pakistan Clash After Threat Alerts
Security measures in New York for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held in the USA and West Indies, have been significantly enhanced following reports of threats , particularly concerning the India-Pakistan match.
The highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash is set for June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
“In preparation for the @cricketworldcup, my team has been working with federal & local law enforcement to keep attendees safe,” Governor Kathy Hochul wrote on X, adding there was “no credible threat at this time.”
Hochul further stated that New York State Police have been instructed to increase enforcement presence, surveillance, and screening processes for the tournament, according to Reuters.
ABC News reported a bulletin from the New York City Police Department, indicating that the tournament and its associated events in New York City might be seen by extremists as an opportunity to perpetrate acts of violence or disruption, as per Reuters.
This update follows several media reports that ISIS-K has urged for a “Lone Wolf” attack on the India-Pakistan World Cup Cricket match next month.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder noted that the World Cup had received an ISIS-K-related threat in April, with more specific threats targeting the India versus Pakistan match.
World Cup matches between India and Pakistan, which have not engaged in a bilateral series for several years due to strained political relations, are among the most widely viewed sporting events globally.
The India-Pakistan match will be held at the Eisenhower Park stadium in Nassau County, New York.
