Madhya Pradesh batter Rajat Patidar is on the verge of making his Test debut against England in the second match of the series in Vizag. Having already debuted in ODIs for India, Patidar expresses his excitement about the possibility of playing his first Test match in whites on February 2, Friday.
In a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the second Test, Patidar reflects on the significance of receiving his first Test call-up. The batter, who endured an Achilles Heel injury, missed a considerable part of the 2023 season, leading to his absence from the Indian Premier League and a setback for the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise.
"Getting my first Test call-up soon after my recovery has to be my happiest moment. It is my dream to represent my country in Test cricket. It felt very good to get that call. I was playing India A matches and it felt really good," Rajat Patidar said in an interview conducted by the BCCI.
Patidar is anticipated to bolster India's lineup, particularly against spin bowling. He shared his experience of being part of the Indian squad and mentioned that he has been gaining valuable insights from the likes of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma during his time with the team.
"I have played a lot of matches in the domestic circuit with some of the India players. I have been interacting with Rahul Dravid sir since the last 2 series. I have not spoken to Rohit Sharma a lot but in this tour, I have listened to him talk about how to bat in different conditions. That gives me a lot of confidence," he added.
Known for his aggressive batting style, Patidar emphasised that he intends to rely on his innate playing approach. Additionally, he mentioned incorporating some techniques learned from India's captain, Rohit Sharma. "I have an aggressive batting style and have batted like this since my domestic cricket debut. I have a habit of playing like that and have not changed a lot of things. I am learning how to tackle field placements from Rohit Sharma," Rajat Patidar said.
When questioned about gleaning cricket insights from Virat Kohli, Patidar expressed that there is much to absorb by observing the renowned cricketer. Patidar disclosed that he takes the opportunity to stand behind and keenly observe Virat Kohli's technique whenever he practises in the nets.
"Whenever Virat Kohli bats in the nets, I stand behind him and watch his movements. Especially his footwork and body movement against the balls pitched up to him, that I am trying to add relentlessly," he concluded.
