Shreyas Iyer Ends Speculation on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's IND vs ENG Selection
India skipper Shreyas Iyer opened up on why young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wasn’t included in the Playing XI for the recent T20I series against Ireland. The 15-year-old, who made it to the India squad for the first time after his exceptional outing in IPL 2026 as the leading run-scorer with the Orange Cap is yet to get his national cap. The expectations were high and many fans predicted Sooryavanshi’s debut in Ireland after a stellar IPL performance.
However, India opted for the tried and tested opening pair and the teenager stayed on the bench for the entire two-match series.
Ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against England India skipper Shreyas Iyer said the team management wanted to back the players who guided them to the T20 World Cup title in 2026.
Shreyas said :
“It's not that only one individual (Vaibhav) has performed others have performed too and it’s important to back them for providing security and confidence to players. Also, players who won us the T20 World Cup 2026 also have an idea about how to approach the format. They have been the main pillars of India's T20I cricket and it is important to back them as well.”

India pay the price in Ireland as debut wait continues
India pay the price in Ireland as debut wait continues The Indian side’s insistence on backing their experienced players did not pay off, as the team slumped to a shock 0-2 defeat against Ireland. It was a dismal end to their stunning 16-match winning streak in T20I series which started in August 2023 and featured two T20 World Cups and an Asia Cup triumph. The series loss also proved to be a tough beginning for Shreyas Iyer in his new role as the captain of the India T20I side, taking over from Suryakumar Yadav.
